  • Bilge water is mixture of sea water, fuels, greases, lubricants, soot from engines, machinery areas and water leaks from sewage, drainage sludges gathers at the lowest point of the ship’s hull (EPA, 2008).

Oil/hydrocarbon concentrations Bilges commonly fall in the 100 to 400 ppm. Bilge separator can only discharge 15 parts per million (ppm) of oil. Recently major shipping companies trying to achieve a 5 ppm. Bilge separators use various methods, such as gravity, centrifugal force, chemicals, flotation, biological treatment and ultrafiltration to polish and reduce oil concentrations meet the principles at 46 CFR 162.

Bilge water testing is essential for environmental compliance in the global shipping industry.

1.Port state control authorities inspect the Bilge unit to ensure compliance with MARPOL Annex I, MEPC 107(49).

2.New build vessels constructed on or after December 19, 2013, and greater than 400 gross tons that may discharge Bilgewater into U.S. waters, Part 2.2.2 the VGP typically reviews the Bilge analysis report.

3.Vessels that have completed two consecutive years of testing with less than 5 ppm of oil and grease may be eligible for a waiver from the testing requirements.

VGP Bilge Water Testing Requirements

  • Bilge water effluent must be monitored at least once a year in accordance with VGP 2013 Section 2.2.2.1.

  • Recordkeeping documentation of analysis results must be retained on board for at least three years.
