Joshtek Marine Provides Sewage Effluent Sampling Services to Identify and Mitigate Environmental Risks
Marine pollution caused by the substandard discharge of domestic sewage from ships has received considerable attention in recent years. 80 percent of the world trade depends on sea trade. A single cruise ship with 3,000 passengers and crew can generate between 55,000 and 110,000 Liters of untreated or inadequately treated sewage water per day. This Sewage water can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, and sewage nutrients that can cause fish kills, elevate algae blooms, and disrupt the aquatic ecosystem’s food chain.
The USCG has adopted the IMO's MARPOL Annex IV standards. But the limits are more stringent if Ships that discharge sewage into US waters must comply with the VGP regulation.
IV regulates the discharge of sewage from ships. It applies to ships on international voyages that are either 400gt and greater or less than 400gt when certified to carry more than 15 persons.
To demonstrate compliance with MARPOL Annex IV. The ISPCC is issued upon successful inspection and is valid for 5 years.
It was superseded by MEPC.159(55) in 2006. Sewage treatment plants installed prior to 1 January 2016 and on or after 1 January 2010 passenger ships operating in MARPOL Annex I, special areas must comply with resolution MPEC.159(55).
This resolution revised the guidelines on implementation of effluent standards and performance tests for sewage treatment plants.
This resolution further revised the guidelines for sewage treatment plants. It applies to sewage treatment plants installed on or after 1 January 2016.
