VGP monitoring requirements for Gray water Discharge

  • Gray management strategies differ depending on the regulatory regime, vessel type, and where the vessel discharges.
  • VGP 2013 Part 2.2.15.2 specifies that vessels that were built after December 19, 2013, and have a maximum crew capacity of 15 and providing overnight accommodations.
  • Vessels that operate on U.S. waters and may discharge Gray water into the waters must comply with the VGP testing and monitoring requirements.
  • Two samples of Gray water must be collected and analysed every year, with at least 14 days between each collection.
  • VGP monitoring the discharge of Gray water effluent, the EPA can ensure that it does not contain harmful levels of pollutants.
  • Collect a sample from each Gray water discharge point and mix, or from a combined Gray water collection tank if available.
  • The records of the sampling and analysis must be retained on board the vessel for at least 3 years.

Following Analytical methods (EPA & APHA) must be conducted in accordance with 46 CFR Part 136.
